Beauty
and elegance are goals that I try to attain with each new design.
The work has a classic feel that is influenced in part by Art Deco
artists and my everyday experiences in life. I unconsciously digest
visual information from nature and man-made items. From the texture
of a particular sea shell to the color unique humming bird, to
a machined part that I find interesting. I make a visual dictionary
that I will draw upon for inspiration in future designs. These
items show up in the use of color, texture, and alternative materials
like plastic, metal, paint, color pencil, and leather.
This
combination of classic and modern qualities creates a type of modern
Art Deco furniture. The concepts behind the design balance between
speculative and conceptual but always emphasizes a high level of
craftsmanship. Design, craftsmanship, and materials are balanced
by a key element in my work which is proportion and form. Another
important aspect of my work is the attention to detail. This shows
up consistently with the use of veneers, inlays, and details that
are not easy to execute, but pay huge dividends when the work is
complete. I enjoy pushing design and craftsmanship to their limits,
to go beyond my abilities even if I fail, I have gained so much
more that will further enhance my work in the future. Cosmo Barbaro |
