Introduction- How Jazz Inspired II Table Lamp came into existence.
Jazz as Inspiration for Furniture Art was heavily influence by my father Dr. Cosmo Barbaro. He was a professor in music specializing in percussion at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. In addition, my father has had a lifetime of experience in drum and bugle corps where he taught many professional drum lines. When the time came to submit my thesis to my professors I naturally leaned into the idea of Jazz as Inspiration for Furniture Art as my thesis. My professors were not fans but none the less I presented the idea and successfully defending this thesis in 1999. Receiving my M.F.A. in Furniture Design from the Rochester Insitute of Technology School for American Crafts.
I knew with the guidance of my father that I had a chance to bring my idea to reality. At the time in my mind my idea was very cloudy, and I really had no idea how to accomplish this. had my doubts that I could even pull off this thesis proposal. Luckily i was introduced to John Beck. Mr. Beck at the time was a professor in the percussion department at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester Ny. that my thesis had a very good chance of becoming reality. Little did I know that this idea of Jazz as Inspiration for Furniture Art would follow me for the rest of my life.
Mr. Beck helped me define the musical elements of each tune that I had selected. Over several design sessions i had to quickly learn how to locate the musical elements but most importantly transform them into basic elements of furniture design. The basic idea is to isolate the musical element taking into consideration how the tune made me feel and how it unilaterally dictated the strokes of my pencil during the sketching process. Ultimately what was extremely challenging and daunting became utterly enjoyable and my extreme pleasure to be able to have had the opportunity to do this.
